Domicile Certificate: Why Housing Schemes Ask for It
Updated 1 Sept 2026 · 3 min read
What a domicile certificate is, which housing lotteries require it, and how to apply.
A domicile certificate proves that you have lived in a particular state for a minimum period. State housing boards use it to reserve their subsidised flats for long-term residents.
Which schemes need it
MHADA lotteries require a Maharashtra domicile certificate, and the rule has been 15 years of residence in the state. Many CIDCO mass-housing lotteries have similar conditions. Development authorities like DDA, YEIDA and Noida Authority usually let applicants from any state apply, but always check the current brochure.
How to get it
Apply through your state's online services portal (e.g. Aaple Sarkar in Maharashtra) or the tehsil office. You'll typically need proof of long residence, such as school leaving certificates, old ration cards, electricity bills, property papers or voter lists.
- Apply well before the lottery, because verification can take a few weeks.
- Keep a digital copy, since it is useful for many state benefits, not just housing.
