How to Avoid Housing Lottery Scams
Updated 1 Sept 2026 · 4 min read
Common frauds around MHADA, DDA and other government housing lotteries and how to protect yourself.
Every big lottery attracts fraudsters. The rule is simple: allotment happens only through the official draw or auction, and money is paid only on the official portal or to the authority's listed bank account.
Common scams
- 'Guaranteed flat' or 'quota' offers from agents or so-called insiders.
- Fake websites and social media pages that copy the look of official portals.
- Phone calls asking for OTP to 'complete your application'.
- Fake winner messages asking for a 'processing fee' to release the allotment.
- Selling 'transfer' of an allotted flat that the seller doesn't actually own.
How to stay safe
- Type the official address yourself, and check it ends in the authority's real domain (often .gov.in or .nic.in).
- Never share OTPs, passwords or Aadhaar copies.
- Verify winner lists on the official site only.
- Report fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 (national cybercrime helpline).
